Spanish Woman on World Trip Raped by 7 Men in Jharkhand’s Dumka Forest,

  1. Jharkhand is reeling from a horrifying incident involving a 35-year-old Spanish tourist who was reportedly gang-raped and whose husband was brutally assaulted by seven youths in the Dumka district late on Friday night.
  2. The assault took place in the Kurumahat area under the jurisdiction of the Hansdiha police station and quickly gained attention on social media after the survivor and her husband shared their ordeal in a video message on Instagram.
  3. The Spanish woman, originally from Brazil, was traveling the world on her bike with her husband when the incident occurred. They were camping near Kurumahat’s Hansdiha market in Dumka at the time.
  4. The couple, aged 35 and 28 respectively, has been traveling extensively on their bikes, documenting their journeys on Instagram. They have covered over 1.53 lakh kilometers across 63 countries.
  5. They entered India from Pakistan in July last year and had expressed excitement about exploring the country. Despite encountering challenges, they remained optimistic about their experiences in India.
  6. Describing the attack, the husband stated, “My mouth has been severely injured, but my partner has suffered even worse. They repeatedly assaulted me with a helmet and struck me on the head with a stone. Thankfully, her protective jacket provided some defense against the blows.”
  7. The woman shared her distress, saying, “My face bears the marks of the attack, but the emotional trauma is far more profound. I feared for our lives during the assault. We are grateful to be alive.”
  8. The National Commission for Women member Mamta Kumari also expressed anger over the issue, saying: “All the accused involved in the crime should be arrested at the earliest and stringent action should be ensured.”

Celebrities also took to social media to condemn the incident and called out the lack of safety for women. For instance, Dulquer Salmaan said, “Crushed to hear about this! You both recently visited Kottayam where close friends hosted you for a meal. This should not happen to anyone anywhere.”

Others too took to social media commenting that parts of India were unsafe to travel through for women. One of them was US writer David Josef Volodzko. In a post on X, he said that the “level of sexual aggression” that he witnessed while living in India for several years was unlike anywhere.
